Side by Side (Chris Kenneally, 2012)

What was the documentary about?

This documentary was about the production and progression of film through time. The film covered renowned filmmakers, actors, directors and cinematographers, such as James Cameron, Danny Boyle and George Lucas opinions on how film technology has developed and their preferences between film or digital shooting. It went through the use and shooting of film with film cameras and how editing has progressed both with film and digital. The film also covered how cinema has changed and what has changed about projection and the archiving of films.

What did I learn from it?

I learnt about the rapid progress of digital technology and the decline in the use of film from certain filmmakers such as George Lucas, who decided to invest his time into the improvement of digital technology and filmed the film Star Wars: Attack of the Clones purely on digital cameras as he believes that for progress to happen, we must used the technology and make improvements.  I also learnt how editing was done using film and how early digital editing has progressed.
